Wonder Woman super star Gal Gadot seemed to dig her own grave for her reputation today. The actress tweeted what she believed was a message of unity in regards to the Israel-Hamas rocket attacks. But she was quickly met with furious backlash and harsh criticism for her words. Find out what Gadot tweeted out, and why people are so angry towards her.
What did she tweet?
This situation of the Gal Gadot controversy first began when the Wonder Woman star sent out a tweet that aimed to spread unity and love in the aftermath of the Israel-Hamas rocket attacks. The tweet began with: “My heart breaks. My country is at war. I worry for my family, my friends. I worry for my people. This is a vicious cycle that has been going on for far too long”.
The actress continued by saying: “Israel deserves to live as a free and safe nation, Our neighbors deserve the same. I pray for the victims and their families, I pray for this unimaginable hostility to end, I pray for our leaders to find the solution so we could live side by side in peace. I pray for better days”, Gal Gadot finished with.
Gal Gadot then captioned the picture of her statement with an emoji of a broken heart. While the star probably expected many to join in and agree with her statements, she in turn got the opposite reaction from that. The post was immediately met with critical comments that turned against her. It got so bad that Gal Gadot even had to disable her replies and quote tweets, and therefore damaged her Wonder Woman reputation.
Cancelled?
Since this tweet, people on Twitter have been cancelling Gal Gadot right and left, and some have even been calling for the Wonder Woman role to be completely replaced with another actress. Twitter user @ZiggyDust wrote that “This is Gal Gadot’s 2021 version of Trump’s ‘There were very fine people on both sides’”.
Others have also stepped forward to support the actress though, such as Twitter user @markofjustice1 who tweeted: “She just wants peace for both sides. Open your eyes, and stop blaming what she is not to blame for. @GalGadot, we are with you.#mywonderwoman”.
Another person wrote: ““The internet is angry at Gal Gadot because she’s an IDF veteran, which all Israelis are required to serve in for at least two years, and had the audacity to share a heartwarming message for peace in the conflict. A lot of disgusting people in her replies”.
Since then, a post made by the Wonder Woman star speaking out for Israel has also resurfaced since then, with fans bringing up an old Facebook post by Gal Gadot who wrote that she was sending love to Israeli citizens, “especially to all the boys and girls who are risking their lives protecting my country against the horrific acts conducted by Hamas, who are hiding like cowards behind women and children”.
One Twitter user @FoxLuthor wrote regarding the old post: “On July 2014, Israel killed 607 people, avenging 2 victims of a suicide bomber. The UN condemned the attacks and declared war crimes were conducted, a UN school used as shelter for survivors was destroyed by the Israeli bombing. And she has the audacity to publish this: #galgadot”.
Gal Gadot herself was a former Israeli Defense Forces fighter, so it’s no surprise that the star is stepping forward to make a tweet about a situation that hits so close to home. However, this has not stopped many people from feeling like it was an insensitive statement and that her words were “propaganda”. What do you think about this situation? Let us know in the comments.
