Sparking the interest of younger children, teens and grown children when working on the Family Tree can be chore. Their attention to life usually does not include history and especially family history. They undoubtedly will have already heard some of the antidotes and facts of the current generations through contact with family members. These are the stories that provide a perfect lead in for a fact-finding project.
The Christmas Season is an ideal time to give kids a jump-start on what might become a lifelong passion for them. This is a time of year when visits and telephone calls are made to family members of all ages. It is an opportune time for the kids to ask Family Tree questions of their relatives.
The questions they will ask need to be specific. They also need to be generic enough to encompass both sides of their heritage. The answers the child receives will be unique to the person they ask and may not be the reply they were looking to hear. It is important that each child know that the individual they are speaking to may not remember dates, but they may reminisce about where, why and who.
To get started, prepare a list of questions and brain storm with the kids for their ideas about information they would like to know about. Sort the questions under Grand Parents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Friend of the Family. From the list, provide each child with not more than three questions to get information about. Each sibling should be given a different set of queries. Knowing who they will be visiting with will make the preparation of their questions easier. It is a given that a lot of the information they glean from their relatives will be data that is common knowledge; however, the simplest question from a child may turn up more than is expected.
Include small children as well. They need to feel that they can contribute to this very important project. When visiting with relatives, take along a re-print of a group picture. The child can ask the known person about the people in the photograph and get the adult to write down the names of the other people in the picture and any information they can remember about the event. Whenever possible, for-warn the relative that this will happen. This is especially important if the child's age allows them to comprehend that they have an important picture to show to one of their Grandparents; but, may not necessarily have the ability to ask specific questions.

Ultimately, a Family Tree project needs to be enjoyable for everyone. This is, after all, an undertaking that will give children of all ages the opportunity to learn about their heritage. The child's conversation and contact with relatives and friends hopefully will pique their interest to delve further into that specific topic with other members of the family.
Spend some one on one time with each of them going over their finds and discussing the experience. Most importantly, remember that the child, whatever age, will orate and or transcribe a story in their personal style. Their perspective may provide clues to another leaf on the Family Tree that has been elusive in the past.
