New York Ends Mandatory Quarantine for Domestic Travelers

The mandatory quarantine continues to apply to international travelers arriving in New York.

BEGINNING THURSDAY, domestic travelers entering New York state are no longer required to quarantine upon arrival.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement last month, with it going into effect on Thursday. Before the requirement was lifted, travelers arriving in New York from domestic destinations were required to isolate for 10 days upon arrival.

Travelers were able to end their quarantine sooner if they were asymptomatic and received a negative COVID-19 test result 72 hours prior to their return and quarantined for a minimum of three days and obtained another negative test on the fourth day after their arrival.

Domestic travelers in New York were only allowed to leave their quarantine locations to obtain medical care, if they were an essential worker or first responder, a member of a professional sports team traveling with the team or to leave New York City.

People were exempt if they were asymptomatic and fully vaccinated or had recovered from COVID-19 within the previous three months.

People arriving from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Vermont were also exempt.

Despite lifting the mandatory quarantine, health officials still recommend isolation following travel as an added precaution.

"As we work to build our vaccination infrastructure even further and get more shots in arms, we're making significant progress ... allowing us to open new sectors of our economy and start our transition to a new normal in a post-pandemic world," Cuomo said last month in his announcement. "As part of that transition, quarantine for domestic travelers is no longer required, but it is still being advised as an added precaution.

"This is great news, but it is not an all-clear for New Yorkers to let their guard down. To beat this virus once and for all we all must continue doing what we know works to stop the spread, including wearing masks, washing our hands and practicing social distancing," he added.

The mandatory quarantine still applies to travelers arriving in New York from international destinations regardless of vaccination status, a previous coronavirus recovery or test results received before travel. They must quarantine for 10 days or seven days with a negative test result three to five days after travel.
