Officer Dead Along With Driver Who Rammed Police Outside Capitol

A man drove a vehicle into two officers outside the Capitol. Both he and one of the officers died as a result of the confrontation.

A U.S. CAPITOL POLICE officer died after a driver rammed a vehicle into him and another officer outside of the Capitol complex, authorities confirmed on Friday afternoon.

The acting chiefs for the Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department held a press briefing where they also confirmed that the driver operating the vehicle has died. The man had been taken into custody earlier on Friday after crashing into a vehicle barricade and injuring two officers.

Acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said that when the man exited the vehicle while holding a knife, the officers "engaged the suspect" but he "didn't respond to verbal commands." After he lunged toward the officers, they fired at the driver. The officers were transported to different hospitals, but one of them has died.

"At this time, the suspect has been pronounced deceased. Two U.S. Capitol Police were transported to two different hospitals," Pittman said Friday at a briefing outside of the Capitol.

"It is with a very, very heavy heart that I announce one of our officers has succumbed to his injuries," she added, noting that authorities can't release information like "names, age, date of birth or anything of that nature at this time."

The officer's death comes nearly three months after Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick died from injuries he sustained while responding to the Jan. 6 riot to stop the certification of President Joe Biden's victory. Two other officers who responded to the riots later died by suicide.

Acting Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee said the investigation into the incident is still in the early stages but there doesn't appear to be an ongoing threat. Authorities are working on determining a motive, but Contee said it "doesn't appear to be terrorism-related."

Authorities responded to the incident at the north barricade on Constitution Avenue when a vehicle rammed into the officers. The Capitol complex and the surrounding office buildings were notified about an "external threat," though people inside the buildings could move freely. Individuals outside in the area were told to shelter in place. Members of Congress are currently on recess for the next two weeks.

Video from reporters inside and outside the Capitol showed several police cars at the scene and a helicopter landing outside of the complex. National Guard troops that have been stationed at the Capitol since the Jan. 6 riots also responded.

Friday's incident comes as security has been heightened – and debated – since rioters breached the Capitol in early January. Since then, fencing had been installed in and around the Capitol, though the outer perimeter was taken down late last month. The inner fencing, however, still remains in place.
